This week Mike Quackenbush joins the Hal, Danielle and Mike in the Nation of Conversation! He’s one of the founders of the independent wrestling promotion Chikara, which he says is, “the Marvel Cinematic Universe realized as a pro wrestling company.” The organization has gained a following for its original approach to stories and hosting the largest tournament in pro-wrestling today.

Quackenbush is also a semi-retired wrestler who’s had a hand in developing some stars in WWE, including Cesaro, Ruby Riott, Mandy Rose and Drew Gulak. He’ll explain what goes into teaching wrestling and what it was like to spend a week as a coach at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

Plus, he’ll talk about why there’s so much disappointment among fans with the WWE’s current product, who he thinks are the greatest wrestlers of all-time and why he believes wrestling is just starting to discover its power as a storytelling medium.

More of Mike Quackenbush’s work can be found in his recent book “7 Keys to Becoming a Better Performer: A Book for Fellow Pro-Wrestlers.”

The Three Count

Danielle put over Twitter user CokeIbushi’s edit job on Ronda Rousey’s promo.

You may know them best for their previous effort, 2015's uber-violent Turbo Kid. Anouk is on the program to discuss Ti West's The Innkeepers. April and her praise the beauty of the "slow horror" genre and how it puts the audience ill at ease. Anouk describes her love for practical effects and the realness of the image on screen. She details the breakdown of directing duties between her and her RKSS fellows. And she goes through the freedom and challenges of making an independent horror film. Plus, she elaborates on her love for American horror and how that has influenced all of her work.

EP46: Thomas Golubic on De La Soul's "Three Feet High and Rising" (1989)

The Album: De La Soul: Three Feet High and Rising (Tommy Boy, 1989)
I (OW) mention this on the episode but this album changed my life. It wasn't my introduction to hip-hop but it was the album through which I fell in love with hip-hop and that set me down a path that shaped the rest of my professional (and even personal!) life: as a writer, scholar, DJ and of course, humble podcast host.
It clearly had an impact on Thomas Golubic too. Our guest for this episode is one of the top music supervisors in the game (as Morgan jokes, he's not just a member, he's the president, literally). He worked on Six Feet Under Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and right now, Better Call Saul; those in L.A. may also remember him from his KCRW days.
Thomas and us dug deep into everything that makes this album so special, not the least of which is how it shifted the perception of what hip-hop could sound and look like. It's may be hard to remember now, nearly 30 years later, but in 1989, hip-hop was dominated by larger-than-life, superhero MCs such as KRS-One, Chuck D, Rakim, etc. But here were these four guys from Long Island, with a wholly creative irreverence, embracing their inner nerdiness (and soul ya'll) and mining a treasure trove of samples beyond the James Brown catalog (the latter would get them in trouble, which we talk about as well). The album, and group, changed the proverbial game. No more no less.
