Improv Everywhere on This American Life

This weekend on public radio stations across America, the wonderful This American Life will be re-running their program which features the nearly-as-wonderful Improv Everywhere.

IE's motto is "We Cause Scenes." They organize events which are a cross between theater, comedy, and situationism... like installing a bathroom attendant in a McDonalds, faking a rooftop U2 concert, or offering boat tours of a public fountain.

The show airs this weekend on your local station, but if you're impatient, you can listen to the show now.

Or, you can listen to IE founder Charlie Todd on The Sound of Young America:
Download "Odd Ends" with the Charlie Todd Interview (MP3 Audio)
or
Listen to the RealAudio stream of the interview

And yes, he was on our show first. EAT THAT IRA!

I just heard this show on the radio and I have to say, I really don't like this Improve Everywhere guy. Sure the U2 thing was funny and the Starbucks thing, but these ones where he fools spicific targets are not funny at all and just sad.

I just got an idea, get the band and the birthday guy together along with some fake news people and pretend his little mickey mouse prank site is getting huge international attention. Then have an fake TV exec ask him to shoot a TV pilot and sign a movie contract and so on. Then finally get some amazing girl to convince him to leave his current partner.

Maybe that's a bit much but I don't like this guy.

I can vouch for them absolutely. Their projects are all about bringing wonder and delight to the world, not about tricking people. Check out their website, or listen to the Sound of Young America interview. Because of the structure of TAL, they need to have a "moral of the story," which in this case needed to be kind of negative. But IE is a really wonderful organization.
