Bullseye

This week's Sound of Young America program bears the theme "Joke Warfare." Two brilliant joke warriors join us for the show, Terry Jones and Dino Stamatopoulos.

Dino is a legendary comedy writer, having written for many of the seminal comedy programs for the past 15 years. He won an Emmy for his first gig, writing for The Ben Stiller Show. He was one of the first writers on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and wrote for HBO's Mr. Show. We talk with him about a musical he wrote about a dead baby and his new show on Cartoon Network's [adult swim], a social satire called Moral Orel. In our full interview with Dino (MP3 Audio), we talk extensively about his writing career pre-Moral Orel.

Terry Jones, of course, is one of the founding members of the legendary sketch comedy group Monty Python's Flying Circus. He co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and directed both Monty Python's Life of Brian and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. He's also written two books on Chaucer, written and directed several other films, and composed several children's books. We talk with Jones about his years with the Pythons, as well as his career since. Monty Python's Flying Circus returns to PBS in April.

Original

The original first season of Monty P was by far their best. It sort of fell apart after that. I mean, don't get me wrong, the movies are classics, but that first season. Wow, it was fantastic.online phd / online colleges / online degrees

Great show, Jesse - you really can't go wrong with guests like that, but you asked them interesting questions too, which made it even better. If you were indeed nervous about talking to Jones (and who wouldn't?) you certainly didn't show it.

Thanks, Martin. Did I mention that I was interviewing Jones at 8AM? That's like, when I ordinarily wake up.

Jesus. And Jones was well into his afternoon tea. How unfair. Then again, things worked out pretty good. Too bad you didn't get the chance to ask about his war protests etc (or did you choose not to?) - I guess the focus was almost entirely on Python because of the new DVDs.

I generally avoid politics on the show, because I don't particularly think they're salient. In some cases I cover them, like say when Dan Piraro was on with his political tour, or when Chuck D was on, but I just don't think it's what the show is about. If Jones had been on to talk about "War on the War on Terror," I would have certainly talked about it.And I mean, more broadly, if you have a member of Monty Python on, you try to talk about that as much as possible.

One night I heard my parents laughing hysterically at something on TV. I went to investigate and they said they were watching some English show called Monty Python. A minute later, the Joke Warfare sketch came on and I was hooked for life, so to hear Jones mention it as one of his favorites was rather thrilling. Excellent interview, Jesse.Did anybody else notice that Jesse kept inhaling after saying "I'm Jesse Thorn, America's Radio Sweetheart" but before saying Terry's name? It was as if he wouldn't dare mention his name and Terry's in the same breath.
