SXSW

Yes, South by Southwest is upon us again, that annual celebration of indie rock types celebrating themselves and each other.
Anyway, let's say we were there (we're not... also, why are we using the royal we?). We would probably take a long look at the hip-hop lineup, then buy our Devin the Dude tickets.
The AV Club is there, and they're doing more conventional stuff, like stalking the guy from Dinosaur Jr.
Also, on the New Sincerity front, kudos to the San Francisco metal chick (and dudes) who brought their rolling concert van to Austin. I've been thinking about how New Sincerity metal is, but I know nothing about it. Maybe one of these days I'll have a metal show, with one of those new indie-metal bands and Brian Posehn.

I'd say that old-school metal, the kind listened to guys with mullets, muscle shirts and Camaros, is NS, with Back In Black and Blizzard Of Ozz as the epitome of the genre. Then Bon Jovi came along with Slippery When Wet and killed all the fun.
If you do a metal show, you'd have to include Brendon Small. That boy loves his metal, as evidenced by your last interview with him.
Oh yeah, he sure does, Carol. Maybe I can do it when his death metal show comes out.
David -- I think you're right about pop metal, but there's a huge metal underground that's kind of amazing, and in my limited experience, very New Sincerity.
No, I agree that metal is NS, but it's only up to a point. I don't hear the awesomeness in modern metal, mainly because I think digital sound processing and recording has stripped guitars of their individuality. A power chord on a Gibson Les Paul through a Marshall stack is a distinct tone that grabs you by the balls. Now I just hear toneless, shapeless chunks of sound pushed to the front of the mix. All the sexiness of the music is gone.
I do, however, think the awesomeness extends down to much the hard rock/pop of the mid-70s to early-80s. Without trying to pimp myself too much, here's a relevant post from my blog (http://wingsforwheels.blogspot.com/2006/03/todays-rhinocast.html) that I wrote the other day. I was going to send it to you anyway, because I thought you might be interested in hearing the interview with Jim Mallon. But I haven't had the opportunity to listen to the full clip.
