If you asked me who my favorite singer was...
...of all time, ever, I would probably say Nina Simone. She's also very, very, very New Sincerity.

she is? as soon as I think I've got NS down, you confuse me again. I love her too, but in an Old Sincerity kind of way.
She's the serious side of The New Sincerity, sort of like one of those ballet-style kung-fu films.
She is too much to be appreciated literally, but she is not to be appreciated in an ironic or campy sense (like, I dunno, Ethel Merman or something).
We're talking about a woman who has come out for a concert, sat down at the piano, surveyed the audience, then got up and left.
Is Colbert New Sincerity?
It's interesting - for example, he recently ranted against undocumented workers in a "Formidible Opponent" segment. He did so in an ironic fashion, yet at the same time, I found myself thinking, "Yeah...they are filling up our schools!"
He's that good. He's such a force of personality he even has me aggreeing with the side he's presenting poorly.

I hear she stole that from Larry David...
