Guest Suggestion Thread

Have a good idea for someone to be on The Sound of Young America?

It helps if they have a recentely published book, or a recently released record, but it's not entirely neccessary.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Things will be quiet from this end for a day and a half or so, I'm traveling to America's Breadbasket, aka the Central Valley, for work, and won't be back till tommorow night.

Tell me who to book!

Andy Milonakis would be a cool guest. I'd actually like to hear from his writing staff as well.

Also, I'd be interested to hear a voice from the Toronto scene that I hear about but have no real clue about.

Hi Jesse,
As a comics/comedy nerd, I'd love to hear Ruben Bolling (Thrilling Tom the Dancing Bug Stories came out last year), Ted Rall (He has several books out or about to be released, including the Attitude series which profiles young cartoonists), and Tom Tomorrow (Hell In a Handbasket came out recently) on The Sound.
Alt-weekly cartoonists get very little attention these days, unless their name rhymes with Raining.
And in the interest of full disclosure, my weekly comic is profiled in Attitude 3, but I was a fan of these guys long before I became an obscure cartoonist myself.

I'm working on Dan Clowes right now, in the comics/cartoonists area. Hopefully going to actually get him, too.

I've thought about Ted Rall and Tom Tommorow... the work of both authors is so specifically political, I've avoided pursuing it. Feels kind of wrong for the tone of the show.

I should check out Tom the Dancing Bug. I've seen it but never read it.

And re: Andy Milonakis... is that show good? I'd kind of avoided it because I had a feeling that it would annoy me. On the other hand, the MTV2 folks were really helpful with Wonder Showzen, so maybe they'd be good for AM.

I say give Andy's show a chance, something from season two (where the writing got better). It's got a great absurdist, almost Stella like, feel.

It's a great show to watch after Wonder Showzen as there is virtually nothing mean spirited about it.

It would be great to hear Marc Maron on TSOYA again. The previous interview was great, though a lot of time was given to remembering Mitch Hedberg. It would be great to have him back to talk about his new radio show.

I don't know if you've been following his latest adventures but to summarize: Air America canceled Marc's morning radio show, Morning Sedition, despite the fact that it was the coolest, funniest, smartest thing on their network and despite the fact it was steadily building a following (and most inexplicably they took it off the air only a couple weeks before Howard Stern left terrestrial radio! stooopid!) Then Air America gave Marc his own evening show which uses a lot of the same bits from Morning Sedition but with a stronger focus on comedy than on politics. Unfortunately the new show doesn't appear on hardly any air america stations as of yet so I'm thinking Marc might want to get the word out to the podlisteners that he's still around and he's got an excellent show. You have to pay to listen to Air America podcasts now, and it ain't cheap, but I signed up because Marc hooked me...

Didn't intend to write that much. Anyway, to sum up: Marc Maron!

Manu Chao indeed! And how about Boots Riley from The Coup? I almost said Boots Randolph, the guy that performed "Yakkin Sax," aka "Chase Theme From The Benny Hill Show." But you know what? I'd like to see what's up with Boots Randolph as well.

Both season 4 of Home Movies and volume 9 of MST3k are being released on May 16, so someone from each of those shows might be interesting. I'd suggest Loren Bouchard, maybe, and Kevin Murphy. Each have done other things they could talk about in addition to those shows. Season 4 of KITH is being released on the 30th. Also, the complete Strangers with Candy is being released in June, and with the movie, I'd suggest Amy Sedaris. She's been a great guest wherever I've seen/heard her.

A book just came out about the Flaming Lips called "Staring at Sound," I think. so the author might (might) be an interesting guest. David Maraniss just wrote a book about Roberto Clemente. I'd also recommend David Mitchell. I'm reading his last book, CloudAtlas, and it's really good. I believe he has another one out this summer.

I vote for Jonathan Katz. The Dr. Katz DVDs are coming out soon and a show with him (maybe H. Jon Benjamin again, too) would be tons of wonderful.

2. Jamie Lidell, musician (5/25 opening for Beck @ Fillmore)

3. John Krasinski, actor (Jim on The Office)

I third Marc Maron, the new show is really something else. I cannot get enough of it.

Paul F. Tompkins is my hero, it would be nice to have him on.

Adonal Foyle - Center for the Golden State Warriors, and also started up the PAC Democracy Matters. I know you don't have too much politics or sports, but this guy is quite interesting.

Rod Cordry or anyone else from the Bobby Dukes story.

Rian Johnson - Director of Brick.

ISOS from AST.

That's a LOT of GREAT suggestions, guys...

Here are some responses...

Geoffrey... I'll email Marc Maron. We almost did something when the new show started up, but he was crazy busy. He's always been very nice about doing the show, so I'll see if he can do it.

Joe/Cibbuano, I'll look into Manu Chao. Heard a lot of good things... I'll get my new intern/associate producer Jessica on the case. She's looking into some really great music guests (Built to Spill is looking pretty good)

Slowy -- Looks like Brian Posehn will be on this week.

I never saw Martin Sargent's show, but with it not being on, I'm not sure he's appropriate.

I'd love to have Terry Gross, but that's a tough booking. Maybe I'll send a blind email or something.

Joe -- I think we've talked about The Coup before... I've wrestled with this a lot, but he/they basically stole $500 from KZSC a couple years ago, so as much as I love their music, I have a grudge against them. Not sure how to handle it.

Jennifer -- I would LOVE to have Dolly Parton on. Does she have a new record or anything? I know she came out with something maybe a year and a half ago.

Erik -- what is Kevin McDonald up to? I've been trying to get Mark McKinney, and I have a line on Dave Foley.

Jon... a pile of great suggestions. Kevin Murphy has been on the show before, and he was a lot of fun. Is it still Rhino that puts out the MST3K dvds?

I'll certainly try to get Amy Sedaris, but she's tough to get, in my experience. I couldn't get her or Colbert or Dinello when that book they wrote came out.

I'll definately check out the Roberto Clemente book. Don't usually do sports, but Clemente is a totally fascinating figure, and I'm a big baseball fan.

I'll also check out David Mitchell.

I'm a new Sound listener and would love to hear from public radio contributor Sarah Vowell. Her new book came out last year but was released in paperback in February. And, she is awesome.

illiphilla... uhm, Jonathan Katz was on next week. I presume you're not caught up :).

Stephanie... I'm not familiar with those first two names. I'll see what I can dig up.

As far as Jon Krazinski (sp?), anyone on network TV is a REALLY tough booking, unless they're doing some kind of other project which they need to promote. They just don't do radio.

Stephendee... Paul F. Tompkins is coming to SF in a month or two. I think I should be able to get him.

I've always wanted to have Adonal Foyle on, myself. Maybe I can get him through his PAC.

I'm all over Bobby Dukes. It comes out on DVD in like two months, and I should have Corddry.

I'd LOVE to have Rian Johnson. Lemme see if I can figure that out.

Matt aka ISOS is a bit toooo insidery, don't you think? Maybe I'll interview him for the blog :).

RE: Rhino

I believe so. What's interesting about this release is that several episodes from the first season are included, and for awhile Best Brains was reluctant to have those shown on TV. I don't know how much input they have over the DVD releases vs. what Rhino can get the rights to.
