June Suggest a Guest Post

Hey all -- still working on some of those guests you suggested last month (Terry Gross, Marc Maron, Manu Chao).

So who do you think would make a good TSOYA guest? Read a good book lately? Is there a brand new record you really think is great? A topic you'd like to hear more about? A great comedian or comedy person you'd like to hear from?

Spill the beans!

I know you're into hip-hop and comedy, but this may be getting a little too niche: MC Frontalot and/or MC Chris. They are both pioneers of the humorous "nerdcore" genre, and I'm pretty sure Frontalot is in the Bay area. MC Chris has been featured on Aqua Teen Hunger Force as MC Pee-pants and others.

Someone involved in "Freak Show," perhaps. Also, Maria Bamford if she hasn't already been on the show.

Calvacade of ideas for you:
Caveh Zahedi
George Saunders
Ira Glass - don't think I've ever heard him interviewed
Joe Matt "Peepshow" - what is he up to now?
Guys who did Stroker and Hoop - what are they doing now?
Jon Glaser, definitely
Speed Levitch -- living embodiment of the new sincerity
Mark Harmon Rob Schrab - Channel 101 guys who have a pilot for VH1
Chris Ware
Chester Brown
Variety Shac comedians
Sophie Crumb (R. Crumb's daughter who also does comics)
I second MC Chris as well
Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream)
Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales)
Kurt Vonnegut
Gary Groth, founder of Fantagraphics
Whoever founded Drawn & Quarterly
Adrian Tomine (Optic Nerve)
Tom Kenny (Mr. Show guy and amazing cartoon voice guy)
Chris Smith (American Movie)

I second Caveh Zahedi. He's a great pick. Others:
Scott Walker (would be relatively boss, although, you know, there's the whole "recluse" thing)
Mitch Hurwitz (what's next?)
David Simon (new season of The Wire starts this fall)
Thurston Moore and/or any member of the Sonic Youth gang

You know what, just go with the kind stranger above me. This is harder than I'd anticipated.

Not to go all-fact checker, but I think it's Rob Scrab and Dan Harmon. I think one or both of them is in Sarah Silverman's top 8 on mySpace, if that counts for anything.
What about Christopher Walla? He does a lot of producing, in addition to Death Cab, and is also an all aroound interesting person.
Aziz Ansari would be good, too.

Also a new interview with Eugene Mirman on account of his new CD, West Coast tour, etc.

There will be no nerdcore rapping on The Sound of Young America.

As far as Andy Blitz, Jon Glaser and Brian Stack, not sure if any of them have really done enough to carry an interview. I think they're all great, though. Maybe a behind-the-scenes-at-Conan thing... I'll think about it.

Next time Maria Bamford comes through I'll book her.

Re: Harmon & Schrab, that's a great idea. I believe Harmon was also producing Silverman's CC show but she fired him.

I should give Scott Walker a shot, who knows.

I just booked George Saunders on the reccomendation of the kasper hauser guys. Will be interviewing him probably for this week's show.

Adding to the comic book list:
Dave Cooper (weasel and ripple)
Johnny Ryan of Angry Youth Comix
Hernandez bros of Love and Rockets
Seth of Palookaville
Jim Woodring

comedians:
Aziz Ansari
Sean Conroy

Writers:
Malcom Gladwell
Daniel Dennett

it'd be awesome to get Ronnie Spector of the Ronnettes.

musicians is a tough call because whether its interesting to listen to them talk has so much to do with whether you find them good to listen to. so whereas i loved the go team interview, the john vanderslice interview did nothing for me. but if you could get some of the people that were talked about by simon reynolds, that'd be cool.

another possible idea would be a show on magazines, since there are so many of them these days and some are quite good.

I'm totally pumped that you've got George Saunders coming up -- that would have been my first suggestion.

Second/third the David Simon, Malcom Gladwell, Ira Glass, and Variety Shac troup recs.

Brian K. Vaughan of Y the Last Man might be a bit too comic-y at this point, but I'm sure he'll blow up bigger in other media down the line.

The MillionDollarHomePage kid might be interesting if you could get something fresh out of him.

The YouTube creators.

How about Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, or some of the background players/writers of the US Office?

You need to get Louis CK on the show before Lucky Louie makes him a star too big to care about public radio.
Zach Galifianakis to talk about his new Comedy Central show.
And also Demetri Martin and Greg Proops.
Sarah Vowell would be perfect for your show.
FOr a good author, Eric Schlosser has a new book out about fast food.

I know politics aren't "Maximum Fun" and/or "Awesome," but you're not going to alienate that many people. Bush is super unpopular in the polls. And you can ask steer the interview from polemics to a discussion on radio and comedy.

Aw, forget it.

t mcsweeny's/believer (i know, you don't like it), readymade, hamburger eyes would probably be most ripe for your thing.

schnippers, lodown/tokion/re:up/etc, scratch, giant robot, vice, arthur are good.

then of course, the new yorker and economist.

but if you ever did a magazines episode, you should get the ego trip staff. its long since dead, but it was a really funny hiphop magazine and they came out with two awesome books.

I too like Brian K. Vaughn. Not sure if he has mass appeal to keep non-comic people interested. I do know that Runaways is great.

Magazines
This is a really interesting video game magazine/journal thing:

Check out the essay "A Hymn to the Hard Corps". No reviews or anything, just essays about games and how they make the author feel.

Dear Jesse --

Thank you for contacting Fresh Air. At this time, Terry Gross has asked
that I regretfully decline to your interview request on her behalf. Ms.
Gross' schedule is extremely tight for the next few months with
interviews, travel and speaking engagements, in addition to her daily work
on Fresh Air.

I visited the site of your show, and it seems like an interesting program.
Wishing you the best of luck.

How about Tim Schafer creator of some of the funniest computer games around (monkey island/grim fandango). His latest game Psychonauts has been out for a while but I'm not sure that enough people have noticed it yet. At least over here in europe there was very little marketing. Oh, and he seems like a really nice guy.

Jesse,

Wow, so many great suggestions. Add my vote for Speed Levitch, Sophie Crumb (doesn't Harvey Pekar have a daughter, too?), David Simon, Louis CK, The Million Dollar Homepage guy, the You Tube people, and Tim Schaffer. There's other great suggestions before me, too, but I guess it's redundant to list them all.

Three other ideas --

1) If you love Pee Wee so much, why don't you marry him? Or at least have him on the show. Seriously -- is Paul Reubens so busy he doesn't have time for TSOYA? I think you'd be a great person to interview him -- a true fan who also has the grace and tact to be sensitive to some of his delicate past history.

2) How about The Sugar Hill Gang? After all, they had (arguably) the first rap single ever, and definitely the first gold hip hop single. I think Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank and Master Gee are still kickin' it together, old school style . . . at state fairs and such. I bet they'd be flattered to be interviewed on "public radio" by America's Radio Sweetheart.

3) I agree that your show isn't really "political," but how about Marc Emery, the self-styled canadian "prince of pot" who's currently awaiting possible extradition to the US. The DEA has him targeted as one of the world's "drug kingpins" even though he never sold drugs (he sold mail-order marijuana seeds), which isn't illegal in Canada. Anyway, the guy's really smart, articulate and loves publicity. He's not a nutty, all or nothing militant activist, but he does advocate compassionate use and sensible legal reforms. His case has a lot of interesting legal ramifications, too -- like whether or not the DEA should be able to cross into Canada, shut down a legal, tax paying business, and haul the guy back to the US to be prosecuted (or persecuted, depending on your pov). Anyway, I know you're not a pot head, but there's more to his story than that. I'm sure he has a lot of support in the Bay Area.

Jon-- how did you anticipate I might not like Def Jux? It's true of course. I don't. I find almost all of their stuff distinctly unpleasant to listen to, though I guess I respect it. I did buy the Cannibal Ox album, and it was impressive, although I didn't exactly "like" it. I'm glad they exist, but unless I get El-P, I don';t think I'm booking them.

No, I know what you mean about being unpleasant to listen to. Their stuff (and El-P's production) is kind of hit-and-miss with me. They have maybe two or three good artists/rappers, but overall I get the sense that I'm supposed to like everyone because they're on Def Jux.
