What's so appealing about Kelis?
She's really good looking, but in a creepy way. Her voice is strong, but harsh. She weirdly got engaged to (married?) Nas. Her only hits have been borderline novelty songs (Milkshake, Got Your Money with ODB, Caught Out There aka the I Hate You So Much Right Now Song). She's never actually succesfully released a record that was both succesful and cohesive. She split with the Neptunes a couple of years ago, and that was the main thing she had going for her. She has a lot going against her, is what I'm saying.
Then she put out this hot-ass record and video called Bossy. Which, like her best work with the Neptunes, pretty much perfectly captured all that was good about her. The harshness of her voice sounds almost teasing against the minimalist backdrop. She looks great in a mean, or, dare I say it, bossy way. She has Too Short. She has a money-green poodle. She's like a mean girl in a movie about Beverly Hills, but she does it so well, I find myself liking it.
F*ck it, count me in.

I wouldn't characterize her earlier output so much as "borderline novelty songs", although I don't disagree with this description. I prefer "repetitive club tripe".
On the other hand, there are some pretty dope remixes of Milkshake, check out DizzyBull's Welkshake
A) The foundation of all dance and funky music is repetition.
B) None of those songs are tripe. Milkshake was raw.
Nas and Kelis got married last year. Doing some research, I found out that they got a five-tiered wedding cake embellished with sugar roses and gilded in 23 kt gold. Naturally.
He really does a picture of her tattooed on his arm as well.
And, yeah, I was pretty sure that parting ways with The Neptunes was a terrible idea...but 'Bossy' has really grown on me.
I like those 'creepy' good looks...
I hear this song all the time on the radio. My brain can't decide if it's the good kind of minimal production, or the boring kind.
Great video, though.
With Kelis and Short Dog on it, it's the good kind. They've got style.
