What do you think of Jackass?
Jordan covered the Jackass sequel's red-carpet premier last night, and it got me thinking about the franchise. Sometimes I think it's awful. Often, I think it's the (grotesque) height of New Sincerity.
As I read the small Times review of the new film, and realized it includes a prank (placing a leech on an eyeball) that may well be an allusion to the surrealist classic Le Chien Andelou.

I think the Un Chien Andalou reference is a bit of a stretch. I'm happy to ascribe a kind of freewheeling provocateur sort of attitude to the Jackassites, but I'm not sure about high art allusion. I do agree that there's something unabashedly awesome about a lot of the stunts on the show.
Jackass says that you can get away with more than you think. That something is risky doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get hurt. Odds are, you won't. It's that childhood spirit that let us do crazy shit like jump bikes into swimming pools and do flips on trampolines.
To answer the question, I'm a 30-something male, and I adore Jackass. I missed the show for the most part and rented the first movie, not expecting to like it. I was wrong. Aside from what I mentioned, part of Jackass's appeal is that the guys are having so much fun. When they're running around in Japan in panda outfits and tackling each other in public, you just want to be in on it.
Were there leeches in Un Chien Andelou? I thought it was just slicin' up eyeballs, ah ha ha ho.
There's plenty of genuinley exiting and entertaining elements in Jackass- but also a good share of things that I didn't need to see, or just fall flat. I could go either way.

Thank you Mr. Joel M. That's what I always tell people when I do silly things and they don't believe me. The same people who bitch at mefor powersliding on a deserted street or for bombing down a parking garage won't hesitate to text message while driving on the freeway.
Oh and FWIW, I agree with your opinion on Jackass. Sometimes it's creative and funny, and sometimes it's a bit much. But at least it's not boring and derivative.
