And the survey says...

I'm thinking of changing the format of the show slightly in 2007. The content would remain the same, but rather than podcasting the radio show more or less as is, I'd make each guest a seperate podcast.

So, for example, in a week with two guests, instead of getting one, hour-long podcast on Friday, you would get two half-hour shows on say Monday and Thursday or something.

I'm totally undecided on this, so let me know what you think. Please share your thoughts both here in the comments, and by voting in the one-question survey here.

Thanks!

Hmm. I don't think I'd have a problem with that, as a listener. I subscribe to the podcast for the content -- you have a terrific show and get some incredible guests -- and I wouldn't mind too much if that content was split up during the week.

I'm just curious about what the benefits of this are, if the radio format is staying essentially the same.

The benefits (that I see) would be:

A) More convenient.
B) Easier to link.

Though of course it might cost us a bit in that a lot of times people tell me the guests they enjoy the most are the ones they didn't sign up for, if that makes sense.

I would say that whichever approach is the least time/money consuming for you would be best. Other than that, either version sounds great.

I like the format now, because I hear a lot of great guests and interviews that I probably wouldn't listen to if the podcasts were by guest.

rheimbro... both are about the same.

dan... I'm a little worried about that.

I kind of like the idea. Mostly because I have a short attention span, and an hour is a little long for me, especially if it's two guests that I have never heard of.

I also like the idea of it later on in the week. I get a little podcast overloaded on Monday when I download all the podcasts that came out over the weekend. I probably be more apt to listen if it came out later in the week.

I agree that often the most interesting guests are the ones I would never have listened to if I had the choice- say, Killer Mike. I generally don't care about rap/hip hop at all, but I thought he was fascinating. The only problem I have with the current format is that I have to listen to it straight through if I'm using a CD player, because it's annoying to skip far forward or backwards if you lose your place, but that's not exactly a huge issue- most of the audience probably listens on a computer or mp3 player anyway. And I don't care when in the week it comes out.

I don't mind this idea, but what if you bring back short bits or things like "Would You Rather?"? Where would they end up?

PS- Have you ever thought about Jello Biafra as a guest?

I also have to admit that some of the most entertaining interviews are the ones that I had no prior interest in. If it's truly not a hassle on your end, I'd *kinda* prefer the conventional format. Whatever you choose, I remain confident that you'll continue to helm the good ship TSOYA towards a brave new world in podcasting excellence, returning to us heavy laden with fine silks and exotic spices.

Hi Jesse,

I like the current format for a very specific technoloy related reason--on an appleā„¢ iPod when listening to podcasts it will only play one track at a time, rather than several in a row as if you're listening to a playlist. When I'm digging podcasts, I like to throw it on without futzing with the box every few minutes to advance it, for example I like to throw on a hour long TSOYA and I can relax and stare out the window of Caltrain without fooling with my Portable Media Player. Yes, we are lazy, lazy people but that's the way I dig it.

I think the one show per guest idea is a very good one. I know you put out the bonus material for interviews you had to edit down a lot, but I think this is better. If I listen to the show, then part of the full interview will be redundant, so I usually don't listen to them. This would also mean you can tailor the show to the amount of material you have from a given guest, so I'm all for it.

It seems to me that you could punt and do both at least for a while. If I was given the choice, I would probably listen to the one-guest segments. But it would be nice to have the choice. Also, that way you would get a more accurate picture of what everyone who listens wants and not just the people with the time to take the survey or write a comment.

I strongly prefer that it stay the way it is now. I like the unity, I like listening to things I wouldn't think I was interested in, and I don't like short podcasts.

What about one guest on the right channel and one on the left?

Here are some Pros (no cons because they would just be the opposite of what the other versions pros are)

One Hour Show:
Pros- Fun/interesting themes that connect the two guests.
Convenience of one file to add to a playlist for the hour.
It is what people are used to and enjoy already, so why change?

Half Hour Show:
Pros: Shorter shows can be listened to when not much time is available to get to them.
If you don't like the guest you can just skip to the next thing on your playlist.
The chance to hear the theme song a second time every week!
Its not what people are used to, change can be good.
Possibility of longer interview segments per guest.

To those who are afraid of not hearing an interview they may like because the Guest doesn't sound interesting to them, I would suggest that if Jesse does go for the half hour version, go ahead and give each show a listen to anyway and let yourself be surprised.

The above is not in any way a comprehensive list, just what I can come up with at 11pm.

As a listener, this change does not appeal to me. I like the current format plenty, and enjoy the variety and elegance of two guests per hour.

I certainly would be willing to download more special extended conversations from the website as bonuses.

But otherwise, the only change I'd like is if you brought back HANG IT UP/KEEP IT UP--perhaps as a little link between guests.

That is all.
