Staying up on The Wire

Robert Chew (Proposition Joe), photographed for The Fader

The Wire is the best TV show ever made.

I've just started on season four (had to take a break for a few months after I finished season three, as the show had completely overwhelmed me). Many of you, watching on TV, are probably just finishing season four. Those of you who haven't watched it yet should rent or buy season one on DVD and get to it.

It's only been the past year or so that the show has gotten the attention it deserves, which is unfortunate. Luckily, HBO knew what it had and hung on. Hopefully they'll win some Emmys soon, because they deserve them.

Here are some extended interviews from The Fader's blog:

David Simon

Robert Chew (Prop Joe)

Anwan Glover (Slim Charles) & Felicia Pearson (Snoop)

Jay Landsman

and in the bonus category, here's an extensive interview with Simon in Slate, and a really wonderful one with Ed Burns on Fresh Air. Earlier this year, I talked about the show with writer/producer George Pelecanos.

I keep meaning to send you an email to thank you for introducing me to this show. Two weeks ago, I finally moved "The Wire" to the top of my Netflix list, entirely due to the fact that you are always raving about it and I have come to trust your taste. The show is amazing! I am hooked. I've never been able to sit still through TV marathons, but with The Wire, I can. I have kept the last two DVDs of the first season locked in my mailbox since I am so behind at work right now and can't trust myself alone in the apartment with them. I have always had a "take it or leave it" attitude towards TV shows, especially dramas, but I can't let go of "The Wire". It doesn't pander to the audience. I love how each episode ends, normally, without traditional cliff hangers or begging you to watch more. I don't expect a neat and tidy crime show ending. I'm fairly certain my favorite character is going to die (Bubs). I'll find out Friday. I can't wait for Christmas break, so I can devour Season 2.

I'm exactly the opposite from you -- every time I watch one, I'm so drained I can't watch another for at least five or six days.
