Al Franken's running for senate...


The AP is reporting today that Al Franken is running for Senate in Minnesota. Such a run had been rumored for some time, and those rumors had heated up since Franken announced he was quitting his radio show in February. What do you think of the idea?

My bottom-line position: perhaps it will draw more attention to his under-appreciated movie, "Stuart Saves His Family."

PS: the above is not sarcastic, I really liked that movie.

It's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out. Politicians often feel they have to phrase things indirectly and they tend to avoid making direct statements about topics that might rate higher than "children are the future" on the controversy meter.
Comedians are the opposite. They overstate for outrageous effect. They use hyperbole to expose uncomfortable truths. So Franken's got a real challenge here. How much of his personality is he going to be required to subsume in order to run for office? He could use his gift for satire to go after his opponent, Norm Coleman. But it might blow up in his face. If he goes too far, he could be accused of "going too far" ...
