Our 09 High Five Contest has drawn to a close. This year's undertaking was marked by some spirited competition, but one clear cut winner. GINA MAI is this year's winner with over 120 points! JJGo's official burlesque dancer Honesuckle Duvet had a good showing, while Leanne and Reid J. were able to track down some past JJGO guests. Ultimately, all comers were vanquished by Gina's sheer volume. Congrats to all who entered!

- Fuse an indigenous folk music with hip-hop
- Start a program giving ipods to migrant workers
- Become a famous actor, then play a cheeky, self-referential version of myself
- Feel torn between two worlds by having parents from two different cultures, then realize that they're not as different as I thought.
- Be Neil Young, or a Neil Young archivist.
- Create a flash game aimed at teaching children about the UN
- Give inner-city kids some tape recorders and ask them to document the sounds of a local organic farm
- Do a "mash-up" of Obama speeches, free jazz and the soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire
- Something something folksy grandma

Music on Fuel.tv

Yes, I know this is lame, but I'm a company man.

I'm guessing that if you are not interested in surfing and skate-boarding and such you haven't spent lots of time browsing the site for Fuel TV, the network that so generously employs me. It might surprise you that the music page houses an impressive number of live performances from some super-awesome, super-credible indie rock types. You'd think that the content of the network being what it is, you'd hear mostly bad metal and white guys playing reggae. Instead you get good schtuff from bands like Art Brut, Foreign Born, and Edward Sharpe. Here's doozy from The Hold Steady:

I Love Timmy

Lately, I've been enjoying the sketch comedy doings of The Whitest Kids You Know thanks to Netflix on demand. I have fallen in love with the one called "Timmy".

Sketch comedy performance has the tendency to be crass and heartless (WKUK is no exception), but Timmy always bucks that trend by bringing sweetness, pathos and just the right amount of sadness to the scene.

When I become a Hollywood bigshot, my first order of business will be to greenlight the Timmy movie.

Trader Joe's Reviews

If you grew up going to "traditional" grocery stores, the myriad of unique products at Trader Joe's specialty super markets can be a bit perplexing. Lucky for you, I go there 6-9 times a week and I'm happy to share my thoughts on their wide array of comestibles.

Middle Eastern Flat Bread - It costs a bit more than the traditional pita pocket, but send one of these fluffy little buddies on a pre-dip ride in the toaster oven and get ready for a snack time freak-out.

Sugar Plums - I was told that these might be associated with some sort of "fairie". Well, I don't usually like to associate with "magic" or "majicks" so when I'm biting into one of these juicy little beauties, I just try to think good, Christian thoughts.

Crumbled Salem Blue Cheese - Eating this food is like a punch in the penis. I mean, like a soft, tender punch from a lover. Like an erotic punch based on trust. This is a positive review.

Banana Nut Crunch Cereal - A real cluster fuck. Of cereal.
