Judge John Hodgman Episode 106: Trivial Peer Suit

Steve brings the case to court. He says he's served as the de-facto leader of a trivia team for years now, and wants to make it official. His teammate Claire says that the team thrives under unofficial leadership. Who is right? Who is wrong? Only Judge John Hodgman can decide.

Nothing trivial about it!

As an earnest trivia/pub quiz enthusiast myself, my sympathies extend to the injured parties, not just in the landmark case of Claire v. Steve, but to all team members worldwide who want to have fun, yet WIN, DAMMIT!

What is not at stake are the prizes, the fame, the cachet when your team is 'kinda known around here', but fragile and tenuous friendships tested by feats of drunken recall, and liver/bladder conditions from beers angrily consumed as tensions mount.

Team-based trivia is a "man versus man", as well as a "man versus himself" situation. Trivia is fraught with tacit entailments such as if you do not agree with your teammate as to the correct answer, you are by necessity indicating that they are wrong, and perhaps even stupid. Boneheadedly, shamefully stupid.

Trivia is not only best reserved for the bravest among you, but those with the broadest range of otiose lore packed away in your little grey cells where no molecules of ethyl alcohol could ever reach.

(Also to those with the thickest of skins, to endure the slings and arrows of defending your answer smugly and arrogantly, only be dead wrong, causing a loss to another team.)

Onward, fellow Quizzers, into the fray. May you live to quiz another day.

CUNNING STUNTS RULE!

My friends and I go to this same Trivia night in Vancouver every Sunday!! These people are totally our rivals!!! We have been beating them a lot more lately, and now I know why! GO CUNNING STUNTS!!

Ask your Doctor if TRIVIA is right for you

Steve, Are you suffering from an overload of obscure facts and figures? TRIVIA can make you feel there's a good reason for retaining all that crap. Possible side effects may include: Smarty Pants; Swollen Head; and Butt Hurt. In tie situations some competitors using TRIVIA have gone on to Sudden Death. If you should experience a string of incorrect answers longer than four see your doctor right away. People who are Claire should not let Steve ruin their fun or stop using TRIVIA.

Oh Steve. No. Just...No.
