Judge John Hodgman Episode 208: Sunrise Upset

This week, Cara brings the case against her husband, Colin. Colin began setting an alarm to rise with the sun each day. He says it's not only useful, but that he enjoys feeling synced with the natural world.

Cara says the sunrise alarm is impractical and is just Colin's latest "New Thing".

Should Colin continue rising with the sun? Only one man can decide.

This week, guest starring Bailiff Jean Grae! For more Jean, check out her Bandcamp OR if you're in NYC, go see her this Friday, May 1st at Jean Grae's Mayday Melee at The Bell House in Brooklyn!

Lisa Harris named this week's case via the Judge John Hodgman Facebook page. Thanks, Lisa!

An episode about something in Taipei? Wow.

Wow. As a local guy from Taipei, I've never thought I would hear something about my hometown on this podcast. I used to play rock music too like Colin so we might have went to some same gigs here a few times. Glad to hear that Cara and Colin seem to be having a good time here. I hope we make you feel welcomed.

(Also, thank you Judge John Hodgman for calling Taipei a "large world-class city". We're having a crisis of confidence these days, unfortunately.)

ADHD?

I am diagnosed with ADHD, and I identified with some of Colin's quirky behaviors as related to the diagnosis. I tend to get really excited about a new project but quickly get bored of it before bouncing off to the next new thing. Also, like most ADHDers, I have a very poor concept of time, so it's helpful to develop a system of staying on track that isn't prone to my own subjectivity. I wasn't diagnosed until early adulthood; now having a better understanding of ADHD, how it has manifested itself in my life, and how to cope with negative symptoms has improved my life tremendously.

Of course, that may not be an issue. I'm just throwing it out as food for thought in case Colin or Cara read this. You both seem like lovely people. Best of luck to you on your move!

Colin Halloween Costume

I'd like to propose a Colin Halloween costume as a possible addition to your Max-Fun Store. It could include ear-bud bolo-tie, teaching smock, band collar shirt and inside-out baking soda socks.
No disrespect to Colin. He seems good and cool, but I think even he could agree that all of his fun quirks might combine to make a great costume.

Also, great show, and Jean Grae is as cool on the show as she seems in her music.

I'm really bothered by Colin

I'm really bothered by Colin saying he was "elated" by the verdict after the very critical (and valid) things Judge Hodgman said to him. I wish the judge had called him out on that. It sounded like all he heard was a very binary "you have permission to keep doing this in Taipei, and even when you return to the US if you really want to." I think more than anything, that shows his narcissism.

I'm really bothered by Cara

Oh my god, but Cara is super controlling and critical in this relationship. I felt really sad for Colin because it's clear that Cara has not given all that much thought to what he needs and in fact is prioritizing her stuff over his (in a way that could be construed as, dare I say, narcissistic) and obviously making him feel crappy about it.

You Never Know

Woah, super weird. I stopped listening to Immortal Technique Revolutionary 2 to put on this podcast, and the super fantastic Jean Grea who is featured in my favorite song from the album is now bailiffing my favorite podcast! *mindblown*

Jean, you can be my bailiff anyday. (You're still cool though Jesse)

If only REAL court were as just as Judge John Hodgman's Courtroom!!!!!!

Jean Grae

Just wanted to say that Jean Grae did a great job on this one. I always feel a momentary letdown when I hear a different voice opening the show, as the banter between John and Jesse is one of the elements I love the most about it. However, Jean proved herself not only up to the task, but a fine and insightful addition to the podcast. Hope to hear more of her in the future.

100% agree!

She's a hit.

Jean Grae is brilliant. I am

Jean Grae is brilliant. I am officially a fan and will be checking out her music. However, I don't think she filled the bailiff role, in that 'presence that is (metaphorically) seen and not heard' as per Jesse's 'shut yer pie hole' small but meaningful interactions. Still a great episode. But totally agree.
