Imagine a co-ed version of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for the digital age — one where kids get to make up their own rules. That’s DIY.org. Their motto is: Get Skills. Be Awesome. And they have badges like Instrument Maker, Circuit Bender, Backyard Farmer, and about 100 others. Kids can complete activities called "challenges" to get a badge (also called a "patch"). They upload pictures and videos of their creative projects and share them on the site, but they often have to step away from the screen to complete the challenges.

And, in some places, kids and parents are getting together in person to work on their projects together. That’s what the PDX DIY Club is all about:

Andrea Leggitt cranks out clever mobiles and other laser cut goods for her company, saltyandsweet design, based at ADX, a maker space in SE Portland. Her life and her creative focus changed when she got some unexpected news shortly after she graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in industrial design.
