Maximum Fun is Hiring a Full-Charge Bookkeeper

Background & Who We Are

Maximum Fun is seeking to grow our team with a full-time, in-house Full Charge Bookkeeper, who will assume the responsibilities of our part-time external bookkeeper and manage accounts payable and receivable. This role will report to our Managing Director, and is well-suited to organized, strong communicators with small business accounting experience.

MaxFun is a network of podcast shows reaching a broad listener base, and dedicated to making the world a better place through knowledge and laughter. MaxFun’s motto, heard across the more than 40 podcasts we distribute, are: Comedy and culture, artist owned, audience supported. Originally founded by Jesse Thorn in 2006, the company’s activities include:

  • Production of Thorn’s nationally-distributed public radio program, Bullseye with Jesse Thorn, as well as several additional hit podcasts.
  • Distribution of over 30 externally-produced shows, with millions of downloads per week.
  • Live touring and in-person events such as MaxFunCon

Job Description & Essential Duties

The Full Charge Bookkeeper will have primary accounting responsibilities at our thriving small business. In addition, the Bookkeeper will be responsible for tracking and managing Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, including calculating our regular payments to shows. This is a new role at the company, consolidating and simplifying tasks that are currently divided amongst a small number of different roles.

Specifically, the Full Charge Bookkeeper will be responsible for:

  • Accounts payable
    • Calculating and completing monthly payments to network shows and talent
    • Calculating and completing payouts for occasional special projects (tours, etc.)
    • Running payroll
    • Completing vendor payments at the request of business staff
  • Accounts receivable
    • Reviewing and reporting on incoming revenue items
    • Issuing occasional invoices for special projects, and working with customers to ensure timely payment
  • Accounting
    • Coding revenue and expense transactions on a weekly basis using standard accounting software
    • Producing monthly financial reports for management
    • Supplying external CPAs with the information they require for tax preparation

Requirements and Desired Qualifications

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree, an Associates degree in Accounting, or equivalent experience
  • Have 2-3 years of accounting experience
  • Be a strong communicator
  • Pay attention to detail
  • Be comfortable with spreadsheets
  • Be kind

In addition, the following specific areas of expertise will be helpful:

  • California Employment Law
  • Sales tax as it pertains to internet sales

Salary, Benefits, and Logistics

The starting salary for the Full-Time Bookkeeper will be $48,000. In addition, our highly competitve benefits include 12 paid holidays, personal time off, health care through Kaiser Permanente (including dental), and reimbursement for membership at the YMCA and classes at the Barnsdall Art Center.

This position will work out of MaxFunHQ, adjacent to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, CA. The office will be relocating to Lincoln Heights later this year.
