Aloe Vera

I realize that this show was posted six months ago but I'm catching up while unpacking from moving. I wanted to mention something that I've come across recently when I was a manager for a garden Center and people would come in for Aloe Vera plants and tell me that they ingested them or juiced them to cure sunburn and other ailments and I would have to tell them please not to do that because while commercial prepared Aloe gels and ointments are to be used topically, the plant contains a mild toxin which can cause stomach upset and other shall we say gastrointestinal distress. Your thoughts?

Plantain

I realize that this is a few months old, but I thought it was worth mentioning that the plantain that was used for sunburn isn't the (much more delicious!) fruit--it's the broad-leafed weed that pops up in most lawns that haven't been manicured to death. Plantain poultices are used for a lot of different skin irritations, bug bites, etc., and there's some evidence that it is actually helpful for minor problems.

Sunburn Relief

Vinegar really does take the sting out of a sunburn. Many years ago I had a bad case that e.g. Bactine wouldn't touch. Vinegar-soaked cotton balls let me sleep.

And yes, I did smell like a salad. But I did NOT care!

"Mad Dogs and Englismen Go Out in the Midday Sun" song

In honor of this episode, here is an old Noel Coward song that emphasizes that many cultures wisely avoid the sun, while only "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" don't!

My English husband has finally stopped "going out in the midday sun" now that he has lived in the sunny US south for a while. And guess what Dr. Sydnee: he will even put on sunscreen - AND wear a hat - without me telling him to!

Your pasty-white fan,
Anne

P.S. When listening to the lyrics, please keep in mind this song was written in the early 1930's...

Psychosurgery

Was wondering what Sydnee thought about this article, also possibly Lobotomy part 2?

topic suggestion

I would love to hear an episode about tuberculosis and the pasteurization of milk.

Thanks,
