Being a teenager on social media sounds exhausting. Do ALL teenagers use instagram like that, or is just the girls?

Having been one myself, I can't really imagine teenage boys obsessively liking each other's selfies. But maybe I'm just getting old.

Love the show! About Instagram...I can explain

My mom and I are huge fans of all the McElroy shows! I'm 25, I teach middle school, so I am currently straddling the divide between teen and adult.

Anyway during this episode (which I loved) you guys were trying to articulate why instagram is so important to teens and young people and I want to build on the conversation.

Based on my experience, and what seems to be the experience of people my age and also my students, platforms like Instagram offer young people an opportunity to define themselves within the larger context of society. For teens especially, the dominant culture tries to tell them what they "are" and what they "should be." Instagram offers teens the opportunity to define THEMSELVES and say "hey world. THIS is who I am, and I get to define how I fit into the public space! but also please 'like' me"

Anyway I think things like Instagram and selfies CAN be a very healthy way for teens and young people to help define, establish, and distinguish themselves within the larger context of society, so long as they are understanding of the fact that there is way more to life than just social media.

I also have a question for Riley...can you please comment on hashtags? I find myself over-analyzing which hashtags to use and not use, and how seriously to take them. I would love to hear your perspective!

Much love to you guys and the show!! (ps- I will probably copy/paste this into an email or something because I'm not sure about the best way to reach you- apologies in advance)
