Craziest Day of My Entire Career: Matt Braunger

The Craziest F**king Day of my Entire Career is a segment that gives us the chance to talk with some of our favorite people about some truly unbelievable stories. This time around, we're joined by the comedian Matt Braunger.

Matt's been working the road as a stand-up for more than a decade. He's got a handful of very funny specials and albums to his name. He has also appeared on shows like Superstore, Take My Wife and Agent Carter.

One of his biggest breaks came in 2008. He got the call to be on David Letterman's Late Show. He'll tell us about the surreal experience of meeting Letterman, and performing on the same stage as legends.

This story has it all: a cameo from Tracy Morgan, a joke about a man named Eggly Bagelface, a special tune by The Pixies, an elevator conversation with Paul Shaffer and it gets even crazier!

You can stream Matt's latest comedy special Finally Live in Portland on Amazon Prime now. He's also on tour this fall with dates all over the country. Check out his website for more information, and follow the latest from him on twitter @Braunger.

Ben Edlund reflects on the origins of 'The Tick' and the revival of the cult comic book character

The Tick is one of the strangest, most compelling superheroes ever. Creator Ben Edlund has lived with the character for over 30 years now. The Tick has been a comic book series, an animated TV show, a video game, and a live action TV show. Now, The Tick is back with another live-action TV show on Amazon.

The Tick is kind of this giant man in a blue suit with antennas on his head. He's got all the classic trappings of a superhero: strength, speed, invincibility. But he's also kind of a dope.He doesn't know where he came from… isn't particularly concerned with money, or jobs, or anything beyond justice and destiny. In this newest show, The Tick is played by previous Bullseye guest Peter Serafinowicz. When he was on last year he talked about playing the superhero.

It's a show that's both preposterous and plausible. The villains are bizarre and goofy - men with chairs for heads, giant trenchcoat wearing lobsters. But there's also people who act like real people. Actions have consequences. And even superheroes aren't immune to government oversight.

Edlund joins us to discuss how his relationship with the character has changed over three decades. Plus, why he feels the latest revival nails the strange, odd tone in ways the other projects haven't. Writing compelling and grounded superhero stories is hard to pull off in a post-Dark Knight world … if you haven't met The Tick by now you're in for a treat!

Note: This interview was recorded before it was announced "The Tick" would not be returning to Amazon.

Tony Shalhoub on the legacy of 'Monk' and the latest season of 'Mrs. Maisel'

Tony Shalhoub is a veteran of both the big and small screens. He's had unforgettable parts in movies like "Barton Fink," "Men in Black" and "Quick Change." He's starred in movies like "Big Night," and TV shows like "Wings."

Tony is probably best known for his work on the hit detective series "Monk." For eight seasons, he played Adrian Monk. In the show, his character had an extreme case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and a bunch of phobias, including rodeos, snakes, crowds, heights, glaciers and milk. Despite the challenges he often faced, it only made him better a better detective consultant for the San Francisco Police Department.

These days he's a regular on the Amazon series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." In the series, Tony plays Abe Weissman, a mathematics professor at Columbia, and Midge Maisel's father. He's the kind of guy that's not very stern, but kinda serious. He's also kind of a traditional guy, and he likes sticking to routines.

Tony joins us to talk about the latest season of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." Plus, we take a deep dive into his time on "Monk," and he'll tell us about the film that inspired him to pursue a career in acting.

But before we get to the korners James is super excited about A Star Is Born, and Nnekay joins in on the the questionable reason as to why we even need another Lion King, is this one even "live action"? The duo also talk about when to have tough conversations with people- James gives examples and Nnekay gives more examples as to why the many tiny mistreatment of black women in the medical field could lead to Black Maternal Mortality. Let's get to it!

Show:

This week Nnekay and James are fighting back against the awful memo that was passed around to major agencies in our government about the definition of gender. Before we get to the main event, James and Nnekay wonder... is Halloween still fun? Speaking of Halloween, Megyn Kelly has some questions about costumes as well, specifically Blackface. Let's just say she's WRONG in her opinions. Luke Cage and Iron Fist are getting cancelled, which makes James wonder if Disney has something up it's sleeves- James also elaborates on his newest obsession: DocuDramas! James kicks of the first korner by explaining what this memo is all about, and how it can impact the lives of Transgender and Gender Non Conforming people. James also gives tips on how we can fight back against this hateful ass memo and what we can uplift and support each other. Nnekay takes the baton by giving more tips on self preservation for POC transgender and gender non conforming people. She also gives a trusty dusty list of books that celebrate and lift up the voices of those apart of the community. Also did James manage to get yelled at by George Takei? I think you know the answer.

See James perform at the Broadway Comedy Club, Sat Oct 27th @6pm!

This week, Guy Branum, Margaret Wappler and Karen Tongson discuss HBO’s Sharp Objects. It’s based on the Gillian Flynn Novel of the same name and is about a woman, Camille Preaker, played by Amy Adams, who returns to her childhood home to combat her personal demons and look into a number of unsolved murders.

Margaret is all about Won't You Be My Neighbor?, the Fred Rogers biopic that’s guaranteed to conjure up feelings of love and kindness even in this divisive time. Karen is all about the second season of the Netflix series GLOW, especially the eighth episode, which may be the show’s crowning achievement. Guy is all about the video game Fobia on Steam, which finally gave him the type of gaming that he can embrace.

The group will give their thoughts on the HBO series Sharp Objects, including why Amy Adams works so well playing a real person. They also discuss what makes the HBO television production model work so well, and why that might change in the future. Plus, they’ll introduce some new elements to the podcast: The Wappler Test and the Pop Rocket seal of approval.

The Pop Rocket 2018 Summer Book Club is a go! We’re reading Crazy Rich Asians. Join the Facebook group and get in on the conversation.
