The Album: Otis Redding The Very Best of Otis Redding (1992)

Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart is the son of a record producer and session player who blessed him with the gift of The Very Best of Otis Redding, the 1992 compilation of sixteen of the best songs from the late Otis Redding's catalogue. His father gave him instructions for listening - the charge to learn all about feel.

We talked about the nuances of jabs and riffs and Otis Redding's pathos, his restraint, Otis' use of "uncool words" his penchant for the word "lovely", and his wonderfully nuanced cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction".

We discussed the sound Memphis music - Stax/Volt, the musicianship, the organic country friend soul sound of the label, and how that sound benefitted Otis Redding.

What Jamie Stewart learned most from Otis Redding was awareness, how beats affect emotion, awareness of feel and how rhythm and emotion impact singing.

It was a great conversation about a career and a life interrupted.

Xiu Xiu's newest album Girl with Basket of Fruit  releases 02/08/2019 via Polyvinyl.

Check out the music video for their newest single Scisssssssors.

Editor's note: Xiu Xiu was formed in San Jose, but the band is now LA-based.

One Bad Mother, Episode 289: Mom Hair Detangled

One Bad Mother

Biz and Theresa try to define “mom hair.” Simple? Practical? Low maintenance? Inevitable disappointment when it doesn’t make us look like we don’t have kids? We can agree that calling it “mom hair” is just another way to insult moms. Plus Biz makes a discovery and Theresa is getting really good at this…still.

It’s a trivia mix of film, TV and the internet this week on Go Fact Yourself with two of the creative forces behind Netlfix's “Mystery Science Theater 3000!”

Elliot Kalan is a newly published children’s author of the book Horse Meets Dog. He’s also the host of fellow Maximum Fun podcast The Flop House. The show is all about discussing bad movies, but Elliott’s made sure that that never impacts his love of great films… even if he can only watch them on his iPad these days.

Facing off against Elliott is actress Felicia Day. She’s most known for creating and starring in the online series The Guild. She’ll tell us all about some of her favorite topics and explain some of things she’s learned as she navigates motherhood.

In this episode, we'll learn about 90’s sitcoms, classic films and the everlasting star-power of dinosaurs.

What’s the difference: Intention and Prevention

What’s the difference between “purposely” and “purposefully”?

What’s the difference between “cease” and “desist”?

Areas of Expertise

Elliott Kalan: Dinosaurs, Alfred Hitchcock, and Abraham Lincoln.

Felicia Day: The TV show “Dharma and Greg”, the board game “Settlers of Catan,” and baking cookies.

Appearing in this episode:

J. Keith van Straaten

One Bad Mother, Episode 288: I Want It! Plus, Feminist Author Kate Schatz

Biz and Theresa are hearing a lot of the phrase: I want it! What do we say to our kids when they have a "case of the gimmes" or are constantly telling us about all the stuff they want? In theory, a simple, “No, you can’t have that,” should be enough…but when is that ever enough? It's exhausting and annoying and giving in would be easy…sooooooo easy, but there is probably a life lesson our kids need to learn. Ugh! Can we hide in the bathroom while telling our children no? Plus Biz has a wish, Theresa is gearing up and we talk to Kate Schatz about her latest book Rad Girls Can.

Find more from Kate Schatz at her website Kateschatz.com or Twitter @kateschatz. Her book Rad Girls Can is out now.
